You had plans this weekend to have a barbecue, invite friends over, and sit on your patio.

The only problem is, that your dog has been using it as his personal bathroom. Now your patio is stained with urine and there’s an unpleasant odor. Don’t worry, you can clean it up.

The steps that I will outline below will allow you to clean dog urine from your patio or driveway.

Note: These steps are the exact same if you were looking to remove cat urine from your patio, too!

What is the Best Urine Remover for Concrete?

The best urine remover for concrete is an enzymatic cleaner. Enzymatic cleaners are made to break down the proteins in urine and neutralize the odor.

There are a few different brands of enzymatic cleaners that you can buy, but I would recommend TSP powder and liquid.

TSP powder is a trisodium phosphate cleaner that is very effective at removing urine and other organic matter.

You can buy TSP powder at most hardware stores and also on Amazon.

Step 1 – boil water

This method won’t work with cold or warm water, it has to be hot.

Ensure you put on your gloves, mask, and safety glasses. Fill up a kettle with as much hot water as you can.

Step 2 – Fill Your jug with the hot water

When the kettle has boiled, pour the water into the jug.

Step 3 – Add TSP to the hot water

If you are using the powder, add 1/2 cup of TSP to the hot water. If you are using the liquid, add 2 ounces of TSP to the hot water.

Step 4 – Stir until dissolved

Stir until the TSP is fully dissolved.

Step 5 – Pour mixture over affected area

Pour the mixture over the affected area and use a metal wire broom to spread it around.

Note: If you are not exactly where the urine was deposited, you can use a UV light to help you see the area.

Step 6 – Let it sit for 5-10 minutes

Let the mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes so that it can start to break down the urine.

Step 7 – Scrub with brush

Scrub the area with a scrub brush. Be sure to get into all of the nooks and crannies and ensure it is soaked.

The ammonia solution will now get to work and start to break down the urine. It is important to let it sit for at least an hour to do its job.

Step 8 – Boils some more water

Once again, boil some water and pour it over the affected area.

Step 9 – Let it sit for 5 minutes

After you have poured the hot water over the area, let it sit for 5 minutes.

Step 10 – Vacuum up

Vacuum up the mixture and debris with a wet and dry vac.

Step 11 – Boil the kettle add more hot water to the area

Repeat the above steps one more time.

Step 12 – Leave for at least 24hrs

Once you have completed all of the above steps, leave the area for at least 24 hours. This will allow the enzymatic cleaner to completely break down the urine and neutralize the odor.

Step 13 – Use Stain and Odor Eliminator (Can be purchased on Amazon)

Spray this over the area to help keep the urine odor at bay.

Note: If the area is large, then remove the spray nozzle and pour it onto the surface of the bottle.

This is a very effective and strong odor eliminator.

After you have completed all of the steps, your patio or driveway should be urine-free and odor-free. If the smell persists, then repeat the steps until it is gone.

That’s it! You have now successfully cleaned dog urine from your patio or driveway.

How To Remove Pet Stains From Concrete

Fresh stains are a lot easier to remove from concrete than old, set-in stains. So if you catch the mess as soon as it happens, you’re in luck!

To remove fresh pet stains from concrete:

Step 1: Blot the stain with a paper towel or clean cloth.

Step 2: Pour some hydrogen peroxide onto the stain and let it sit for a few minutes.

Step 3: Scrub the area with a brush.

Step 4: Rinse the area with water and let it dry.

If the stain is still there after following these steps, then repeat them until it’s gone.

To remove old, set-in pet stains from concrete:

Step 1: Mix 1 part ammonia with 3 parts water in a bucket.

Step 2: Pour the mixture over the stain and let it sit for a few minutes.

Step 3: Scrub the area with a brush.

Step 4: Rinse the area with water and let it dry.

If the stain is still there after following these steps, then repeat them until it’s gone.

Why Does Your Dog Pee On Concrete?

This is normally a trait with older dogs that can’t seem to hold it anymore. They might pee on concrete because it is easier for them to get to than going all the way outside, or they might do it because they are marking their territory.

There are a few things that you can do to help stop your dog from peeing on concrete:

  • Make sure you take them for regular walks and bathroom breaks.
  • If you catch them in the act, say “no” and immediately take them outside to pee.
  • If your dog is peeing inside because they can’t hold it anymore, you might want to consider getting them a potty patch or training them to use a litter box.
  • If your dog is peeing on concrete to mark their territory, you might want to try obedience training to help stop this behavior.

Does Dog Pee Stain Concrete?

Yes, dog pee does stain concrete. This is because concrete is porous and will absorb the urine, which will then cause a yellowish or brownish stain. However, if you can attend to it straight away, you can usually remove the stain quite easily.

How Long Before Dogs Can Walk On Concrete

Your best bet is to give it 24 hours. This will give the concrete time to dry completely and will help to prevent any staining.

If you can’t wait 24 hours, then you should at least wait until the concrete is no longer wet.
